The breadth of topics covered by CIS-based scientists is reflected in the variety of degree programs. CIS faculty members teach courses for students enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate degree programs at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich.

CIS Graduate School

The CIS Graduate School offers programs for obtaining an MA, MAS, or PhD degree:


MA in Comparative and International Studies (MACIS):

This degree program combines the study of Comparative
Politics and International Relations. Its student body is largely international.
All courses in this program, which takes three semesters of full-time study to
complete, are taught in English.

MA in Political Science:

This degree program covers all areas of political science (Comparative Politics, International Relations, Public Policy, Swiss Politics, Political Economy, Political Theory). It takes four semesters of full-time study to complete and is largely taught in German.

Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Development and Cooperation:

This program provides training in the field of cooperation with developing countries and transition countries. In addition to two semesters of full-time study in Zurich, it includes an 8-10 month project assignment. Courses are largely taught in German.

MAS in Security Policy and Crisis Management (MAS-SPCM):

The MAS-SPCM is a part-time program tailored to the needs of senior executives wishing to enhance their knowledge of security policy and develop their crisis management skills. Courses are taught in English.

PhD:

Entry into the CIS PhD program is contingent on holding an MA or MSc degree and on obtaining the agreement of a CIS professor to serve as main advisor. Obtaining a PhD takes 3-4 years of full-time work, including educational activities and research for the dissertation. The PhD degree is awarded either by ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich, depending on where the main advisor is based.

Master of Arts in Comparative and International Studies (MACIS)

A research-oriented program that integrates the fields of comparative and international politics through a specialized set of courses. With its strong emphasis on methods, theory and research, the program serves as an excellent preparation for further academic work at the doctoral level.

A BA, BSc, or an equivalent degree from a recognized university; completion of at least 12 credits ECTS in political science, economics or sociology; proof of English proficiency. Note: competitive selection process.

3 semesters (full-time)

Master of Arts in Political Science (University of Zurich)

MA program in political science, whereby students will specialize in a chosen sub-field. A substantial part of the program is the writing of a high-quality MA thesis in the student’s area of specialization.

A BA, BSc, or an equivalent degree in political science (120 credits ECTS) from a recognized university; German language proficiency. 4 semesters (full-time)

Master of Advanced Studies in Security Policy and Crisis Management (MAS-SPCM)

Part-time degree program tailored to the needs of senior executives wishing to strengthen and develop their security policy expertise and crisis management skills.

A university degree and a minimum of five years of executive leadership experience; proficiency in English and German

18 months (part-time), including 16 weeks of classroom instruction structured over 6 blocks; 560 hours individual preparation and examinations; 600 hours for thesis.

MAS in Development and Cooperation, NADEL

Postgraduate program providing training in the field of cooperation with developing countries and countries in transition. An MA or equivalent degree in any discipline; German language proficiency

2 semesters of coursework (full-time) and a 8 – 10 month project assignment if applicable

PhD Research degree with emphasis on the writing of a doctoral dissertation. Students also attend courses in their field of specialization.
