Summer School

'Governing the Transition to a Bio-based Economy'

Science & Policy Summer School  (Einsielden, 20-23 August 2013)

The transition to a biobased economy is acknowledged as a prerequisite for sustainability, but how can it be accomplished? What are the contributions of plant science research to the bioeconomy? How does a bio-based economy transform markets? And what are the implications thereof for the governance of economies?

This summer school has two aims. First, the challenges and potentials for the transition to a bio-based economy will be discussed together with invited international experts from the fields of natural sciences, economics, political science and law. It will provide a platform for experts and PhD students to address the topic from various angles and to collaborate in the development of an interdisciplinary framework bringing together those pivotal components needed for the development of a sustainable bio-based economy. Secondly, the summer school provides an interdisciplinary working ground both during and beyond the formal framework of the summer school. Opportunities for this will be created, among others, by the inclusion of team-work sessions focusing on a particular aspect of the bio-based economy as well as by the organization of informal panel discussions.

The School is jointly organized by the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center (ETHZ) and the IPZ (UZH)

CIS Brown Bag Seminars

The CIS wishes to support social and scientific interaction and exchange between its researchers in time- and resource-efficient ways. To this end, the CIS Board finances so-called brown-bag events. The idea is that a number of CIS researchers can come together around a research theme of shared interest and meet on a regular basis to discuss that theme while enjoying a brown-bag lunch financed by the CIS.

Requirements:
At least 5 CIS researchers (including PhD students and advanced MACIS students) from two or more different research groups may form a group and submit a funding application to the CIS. The group should meet regularly over the course of at least one semester. To ensure that the group reaches its goal of jointly addressing a specific research theme, group membership obliges members to prepare properly for each meeting in a suitable way (i.e., reading the texts to be discussed, preparing feedback on the work of others, etc), as well as attendance at the group’s brown bag events (except in the case of illness etc). Group membership implies a high degree of commitment.
